Analyzing the visitors to your Plug-In Profit Site

Once you have your Plug-In Profit Site and you've started to promote your site by building up links, article submission, Search Engine Optimization, traffic exchanges, list building, directory submission, forum posting and more, you need to know whether or not your efforts are paying off.

The obvious result is that you will start to make sales and get signups to the affiliate programs that are part of the Plug-In Profit Site. You will know when this is happening as you will begin to receive emails with the following subject lines:

"New Host4Profit Account" - From Host4Profit
"Way to go Suzanne, you have just enrolled someone" - from Success University
"New Affiliate (Joe Bloggs)" - from SFI

If you have not reached that stage yet, you still need to monitor your progress. The best way to do this is to analyze the visitors to your site. The sort of things you may want to look at are:

(1) The total number of unique visitors to your site per day
(2) Where your visitors come from (e.g. search engine, another website)
(3) What keywords are people using in the search engines to find your site
(4) Which pages on your site are the most popular
(5) Entry and Exit Pages
(6) The path that your visitor takes through your site (which pages they visit in which order)
(7) The countries that your visitor come from
(8) The length of time that your visitors spend on your site

The good news is that Host4Profit provides a tool called Webalizer that provides you with 1-5 above.

Just go to http://yourwebsite.com/stats or login to your WebEPanel and click on the stats button.

On the first page you'll see some graphs and you can find out the number of daily and monthly visitors, files, hits, pages and site. The most important stat is Visitors and you should be aiming to increase this every month.

If you then click on one of the months in the list you can see a full breakdown of your stats. Click on the Entry and Exit links to quickly see a list of the different pages that your visitors arrive on your site at and the last page they visit before leaving.

Click on Referrers to find out which websites referred your visitors. If I look at my stats, one of my top referers is Google, showing that the majority of my visitors come from the Google search engine. I can also see the URLs of article directories that I have published some of my articles on, showing that my article submission is paying off.

Click on URLs to find out which pages on your site are the most popular. The URL of each of the visited pages on your site will be listed here along with the number of times that it has been visited that month.

Finally, you can also click on Search to see the keywords that are being used to find your site on search engines.

The Webalizer stats will give you a good overall picture of how you are doing with your site promotion. You should aim to review your stats at least once a month to see how you are doing. Read the Webalizer Stats Quick Help Guide here.

If you want to go one step further I would recommend installing StatCounter. StatCounter is free from StatCounter.com and is far superior to the Webalizer stats. This will provide you with far more detail than Webalizer including information about how the visitors move between the different pages on your site (visitor paths), the length of time that your visitors spend on your site and the countries that your visitors come from.

Avoiding Information Overload

It's very common when you start with the Plug-In Profit site, or any other internet marketing project for that matter to feel overwhelmed with information, especially if you are new to this.

First things first - don't panic! Most people feel like this at some point or another. It does get easier, honest :-) When I first started with my Plug-In profit site I had my moments of information overload. I knew absolutely nothing about internet marketing and would often find myself spending ages reading emails, browsing through websites, reading forums and aimlessly surfing the internet without achieving anything. Then I'd suddenly think "Arghh, there's so much to learn, how on earth am I going to do this!" and feel like I had a mountain to climb.

There are a few things you can do to try and ease these feelings:

(1) Stay positive - remember that everyone feels like this when they learn something new. You will never know everything. It will get easier.

(2) File your emails. When you start with the Plug-In profit site you will receive email training from Stone and the various affiliate programs that you have joined. You do not need to read all these emails right now. Sometimes when your inbox gets cluttered up this adds to your feeling of panic. Create some folders in your email program e.g. PIPS, Empowerism, SU, IMC, Traffic Swarm, Host4Profit. File all the emails into these folders immediately. This way everything will be much more organised and you will feel more in control.

(3) Make a to do list. Once a week or once a month have a think about what you want to achieve and write this down. Then list everything you need to do to achieve this, taking into account how much time you have available. Make sure there is time on your to do list for reading emails and training, especially in the beginning. Every day when you sit down at your computer focus on completing the tasks on your list.

(4) Follow the 30 days to Success. Stone's training program is an excellent way to get started. You don't have to do it all in 30 days though. Perhaps you can aim to do 2 days of the training each week, or more if you have time. This is exactly what I did when I started with the Plug-In Profit site and it works!

Finally, if you still feel overwhelmed, ask for help. Email your sponsor or make a post in the Plug-In Profit support forum. There are always plenty people in the forum who will be happy to help you out and encourage you.

The Colors of Success

As you begin to build your business and start getting sign ups it will be critical for you to understand the different personality types that make up your membership base. The following is an overview of the "Colors" system. I know of no other subject that when used correctly can have such a positive impact on your life and your business.

Yellows
Yellows make up 35% of the population. They are nurses, schoolteachers, UN workers … the nurturers. They give from the heart. They don't have time for themselves, because they give to everybody.

Yellows have built some of the largest organizations in network marketing... WHEN they have the belief they can do it.

How To Work With A Yellow
To color your way to the top, you need to learn to be a chameleon.
Yellows don't want to be sold. They don't like pushy, aggressive salespeople. When you talk with a Yellow, become a Yellow. Slow the pace. Contain your excitement. Lower the volume. Yellows see excitement as hype, you trying to sell them. Don’t tell a Yellow about making $10,000 a month, because they’ll turn right off.

Instead, visit with them. Skip the business. Talk about their family, their kids, their vacation.

Blues
BLUE’s “just wanna have fun.” They're 15% of the population. They're always in a sales business of some kind. They jump from program to program to program, looking for fun. These are the
planet’s most creative people.

A Blue sees the big picture instantly. They don't need or want all the details. Blues can eat an elephant, but not at one meal.

How To Work With A Blue
With a Blue, talk excited, get excited. Talk about going scuba diving, sky diving, having fun, fun, fun. That's what they want. "Hey, when you meet me at the airport, I'll be wearing a Hawaiian shirt. You'll know me. I'll have a big, funny hat on." That's what they want to talk about.

They’ll talk about vacations & family, but most of all they want to talk about fun things to do.

Greens
Greens are 35% of the population. They're the analytical people. They analyze it to death. They've missed millions of dollars in opportunities because they analyzed it too long.

How To Work With A Green
Greens believe they're the smartest people on the planet. With a Green ... in 2-3 minutes, you'll know you have a Green. They want ALL the details.

You are NOT going to sell them. Don’t even try. They have to sell themselves. They'll go to the website, they'll listen to the conference call. Then they'll go to the next website and the next link. If you have 27 links on your website, they'll go to every one. They'll read all the testimonials, all the articles, etc.

Enunciate all your words correctly for a Green. Don't speak too fast. Don't speak too slow. Be upfront. Give them all the information. Answer all their questions. Give them more websites to go to.

If you call in the meantime to answer questions, they'll be abrupt. They see that as you being pushy. Let Greens analyze the information at THEIR pace.

In a week or 2 or 3, they’ll call back for more information or ready to start. They’ve sold themselves; decided this is the perfect business. Greens want to feed a Blue the elephant in one meal. And that's the way the Green will build the business.

Reds
Reds are 15% of the population. They are money-motivated, moneyfocused.

Don't bother talking to them about your family or your vacation. They don't care. They know if you get married, you're supposed to have kids. If you have kids, you're supposed to go on vacation. End of story. Don't want to talk about it.

How To Work With A Red
They want to talk about the money, the money, the money. For them, it's a sales business.

Reds are the corporate CEOs, the "get-the-job-done" people, the ones everyone in network marketing is looking for.

But it's a fallacy. Reds are just 15% of the population, and they are absolutely not coachable. They have the biggest egos. They order people around. It works in corporate America, but not in network marketing.

How To Write Great Articles Fast And Easy

What most people don't realize is that the work is already done for them, they don't need to come up with unique content from the top of their heads, they just need to look for what is already out there and improve on it.

Every possible topic has been covered and covered well by someone, but most of the time these people don't even want to profit from their work, they do it for the fun of it, which is great for you.

While you can't steal these people's hard work, (we wouldn’t want to anyway, we want to profit from our work) you can use their ideas and learn from their content to write your own. Anyone can become an expert enough in a subject to write a 750 word article on it in minutes if you have the write content in front of you.

I'm skipping ahead of myself here, but I'm going to tell you where to find this content now, then tell you how to come up with article ideas afterwards.

When I come up with an article idea I go directly to the source of the Internet's content. Online bulletin boards, FAQ pages and Article directories!

Every time I need to learn about something to write about it or just for the heck of it, I go to these places......

Everything I could ever want to know about nearly every subject known to man I can find
for free there, if you're willing to dig for it.

All I then do is dissect all the information out of the articles, re write them into my words and add a snazzy article title.

Say you wanted to write an article or articles on fly fishing to promote a fly fishing e-book thru clickbank.com, here's what I would do.

I would go to Groups.google.com and type in fly fishing and see what questions people were asking.

I would also go to Goarticles.com and type in fly fishing and see what articles are already written and how many people have viewed them so you can tell which article topics are the most popular.

Then when I wanted to start writing my article I'd go to FAQ.org and look there for fly fishing Frequently Asked Questions and rewrite that content in my own words for my own articles.

****DISCLAIMER*****

I don't mean steal other peoples content when I say rewrite. I mean use the FAQ's are a place to research a topic and then use that research as a bases for your articles.

Your articles don't have to be masterpieces that are 5000 words in length, in fact it will help your sales if you keep them short 500 to 750 words and you give your readers
information they can instantly use and implement.

The most important part to your article is your article title; it will make or break your article.

When people read articles they want information that they can use straight away. Say for you instance you're writing about how to get your baby to sleep better at night, then you'd want a title something like this.

"6 Easy Steps For A Better Nights Sleep For You And Your Baby That You Can Implement Tonight!"

Ok, that's not perfect but you get the idea.

I've found if you're targeting the Internet Marketing niche you'll find your articles will get a better response and you will make more sales if you give people a plan they can use to make money straight away from your article.

For instance, let's say your promoting the "Google Cash" e-book that shows people how to make money with Google Adwords, you could write articles on the following....

• How you made money following the formula in the ebook.

• Give them a well thought out business plan they can steal and use as their own.

Or even....

Tell them how you failed using the Google Cash method but another method worked for you.

People love a story, success story or even a failure.

Few Tips to Help You Succeed

Internet marketing is a unforgiving business and getting side tracked is almost inevitable. I have often found myself searching and wondering around the internet when I should be concentrating on my business' everyday operation. Everyone who runs their own business on the internet should always make a list of day to day things they need to accomplish. Here's a few things I do on a daily basis to make sure that my business grows.

Getting in the right frame of mind

Starting off my day on the right foot is imparitive to my success. Like the title suggests "consistency leads to success". If I get off track then minutes and hours are lost and everyone knows time is money. Everyday is a challenge, some days are better than others in that you have more sales. Its the days that you don't see a single sale that is the real kicker and these are the days you have to tell yourself that you will never give up. The reason 95% of internet marketers fail is because of this reason. They think they can instantly make riches on the internet and when they don't make money right away they quit and move on to something else. I can honestly tell you that it takes hard work and consistency on a daily basis to make money online. So everyday I get it into my head that failure is not an option and that I won't become part of the ever growing statistic.

Blogging and Pinging

Everyone knows that having a blog to help promote your business is a must. Even better is to self host your blog on your own server as a subdomain of your main website. Keeping traffic on your site is a crucial point in making sales online. Once you have a blog set up you should make posts to it everyday for the first while to build up the content. Search engines love fresh new content and in order to get the search engines crawling on your site you should have alot of content for them to devour. Once you have done this then post every other day or at least 2 to 3 times per week. Remember to ping the posts you make each and everytime you post something new. For pinging services I use Pingoat.com, Pingomatic.com and Ipings.com

Article Submission

Article Marketing is nothing new to the internet but most people will tell you that its a great way to get traffic and one way back links. Once you learn how to write informative and good content its a good idea to get your thoughts out to the world and this is what article marketing is. Article directories ar a dime a dozen on the internet and from just one submission to a directory could potentially get you thousands of vistors and one way back links. What are one way back links you might ask? Well basically its an incoming link to your website. Most article directories allow you have an author box, resource box or bio box and this is where you tell the reader about you or where they can get more info about what you have wrote. When putting a link to your website in the "author box" you should always try to anchor it in keywords that relate to your site.

Generally I write 1 or 2 articles per week and submit them to about 450 article directories. I do use article submission software which makes the task much easier. To use the same submitter software I use visit my site and get it for free. The submitter comes with 450+ article directories you can program onto the submitter.

Participating in Forums

I have to admit that since joining a few forums my business and knowledge of internet marketing has growen immensely. At first I just read everything I could and learned from all the people on the forum. When I had something to say that was informative and helpful I made a post. When you make a post to a topic it should help the person who made the original post and unless you have something to contribute you should not post at all. If you have a question or something you wish to discuss then make a post and someone will most likely help you out. Basically I use forums to learn about internet marketing and get answers to questions I have. Remember the saying "you learn something new everyday", well this is why I go and participate in forums. To find some well known forums to join enter "Forums" into your favorite search engine.

Directory Submission

I regularly use directory submission software to increase the amount of back links to my website. In order to rank well in the search engines one must increase his/her link popularity. The more incoming links to your website means that your site is important and thus search engines rank it higher. To get the software I use visit my website below.

By being consistent you will achieve your goals. Make a list of things you need to do and stick to it at all cost. It just could be the difference between success and failure.

How to Measure Advertising Success Online

It is easy for me to tell you that you need to track the success
of your online advertising. It is also easy for me to tell you
that you must do so in order to know which of your advertising
is helping you to make a profit, to break even, or to break the
bank. Far too many advertisers get caught in the online money
pits in an effort to develop their online business.

DON’T BE AFRAID

I also know that when I say these things, some people get
spooked. People get spooked because although they might run an
online business, they may not understand the technology that
keeps their business running.

Let’s face it.

More people are learning how to design and develop their own
webpages. In fact, software has been created to help them do so
rather easily.

But when it comes down to the more complex technologies such as
web logs, database technology, and web programming, most people
just freeze up and fail to make an informed decision.

Some will turn to a programmer with hopes that a programmer
could save their online business, and many will get burned by
their personal programmers. When a programmer burns a webmaster,
the cost can be very high. And at the end of the day, the
programmer may leave the webmaster with a broken web site.

The only real choices left to most webmasters is to learn how to
install pre-made scripts on their own, or to keep their websites
technologically simple. *Technologically simple* often fails to
help the webmaster find the success that he or she so fervently
desires.

UNDERSTANDING THE NATURE OF PRE-MADE SCRIPTS

Web software is often very simple in its installation, so the
webmaster really should not fear it.

All one needs to install their own pre-made web scripts
(software) is an online web site file manager or optional FTP
software. They will also need the ability to change the
*permissions* on the files on their web server.

When downloading scripts for installation on your server, the
file may come in .zip, .tar, or .gz format. Each of these are
variations on the compressed / zipped file format. There are
many utilities available for unzipping files. One such utility
is WinZip which can be found at: http://www.winzip.com

Most scripts, once downloaded and unzipped, may appear in text
format with extensions such as .php, .cgi, .pl or .cfg.

Most of these files can be read as plain text in an application
like NotePad. Occasionally, the file will be in a binary format
which cannot be read with a text editor.

The files which can be read in a text editor are often written
in the Perl or PHP programming languages.

While most of the scripting will seem like Chinese to you, you
will be able to pick out certain sections that can be read and
understood easily.

If the application also contains a .cfg file, this is your
configuration file that can usually be changed to reflect your
own personal needs or desires for the operation of the software.

NEXT STEP, UPLOAD THE FILES TO YOUR SERVER

Most of these web applications will have a readme.txt file
included with it. If it does, please read it. If it does not,
don’t worry, this section is for you.

You must upload the files to your server as plain text. If you
are using FTP to upload the files, then you must tell your
software to upload the files in ASCII format. If you are using
your web file manager, then the files will automatically upload
correctly.

Once the file is on your server, then you must change the file
permissions.

Files with the extensions .php, .cgi, or .pl are executable
files and there permissions must be set to 755. Files with the
extensions .cfg, .txt, or .html must have their permissions set
to 644. Files and folders that will be written to must have
their permissions set to 777. Files with no extensions can be
classified as any of the above, so check the readme.txt file.

755 defines an executable file. 644 defines a read-only file.
And 777 defines a writable file.

Once the files are on your server and the permissions are set
correctly, the application you have placed on your server should
work for you just fine.

LOCATING PRE-MADE SITE TRACKING SCRIPTS

Probably one of the best resources for locating pre-made scripts
is: http://cgi-resources.com

If after reading this article you still fear the task of
installing a pre-made script on your server, then you might
seriously consider remotely hosted site tracking software. If
you opt for this route, be sure to buy the pro version of the
software offered. If you don’t choose the paid version, you
might find your own competitors having access to your site
tracking data! That should not be an acceptable option to you.

THE PURPOSE OF SITE TRACKING

With site tracking software running on your server, you can
review how many people came to your website and what URL’s they
might have used to find your website. You can also see where
your visitors have come from, when they came, how long they were
on your site, at what page they entered and left your site, and
much more.

This is the kind of information that will help you to determine
with some certainty how effective your advertising is and how
profitable your advertising can be.

Operating without tracking data is tantamount to operating a
business with the intent purpose of failing.

I'd like to give you some tips and suggestions for getting started with Success University. It's very easy to become overwhelmed when you start a new program, especially if you are new to internet marketing. Don't despair - what you need is an action plan.

This could be a link, a banner, a few paragraphs of information, an article or preferably a combination of these. You can get banners from the Resources->Marketing section of the Success University website. If you don't have a website my personal recommendation is the Plug-In Profit Site. Another free website to promote your Success University is PIF4P. If you'd like a free blog you can create on on Blogger. .

(5) Choose a Success University Page to advertise - There are various Success University pages that you can advertise. These include the http://pkumar4.successuniversity.com/page and the http://pkumar4.successuniversity.com/New_a_Slim.aspx?PgID=12&GrpID=4&Type=1& page (replace pkumar4 with your Success University ID). Alternatively you may want to construct your own splash page.

(6) Free Advertising - there are numerous methods of free marketing and the following are recommended, expecially if you have more time than money!

Promoting Your Business with Copper Wire? Think Again.

So many people launch their first or second business with the
misconception that they can survive without advertising. It is
their fear of failure that almost single-handedly assures their
failure. They fear spending the money that they need to get and
keep their business running during those early years of their
operation.

Let’s face it, when you start in business, money is usually
pretty darn tight. So, you must figure out how to get off the
ground without throwing your money down the drain. Every single
red cent is important enough to hang onto with a tight fist.

NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO REINVENT COPPER WIRE

I am reminded of an old joke a friend used to tell about himself.

My friend had always told me that both he and his brother were
the inventers of copper wire. He insisted that the two of them
were fighting over a penny one day and managed to stretch it out
into the first strand of copper wire known to mankind.

Indeed, now is not the time to try to reinvent copper wire.

ADVERTISING IS A NECESSARY COMPONENT OF A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS

The point of advertising is to notify your customers of the
existence of your business. It is necessary to tell people that
you are in business and to tell them what products and services
you are offering.

Unless people know that you are offering a certain product or
service at a certain price, no one will knock upon your door to
buy your wares.

If you fail to attract customers and dollars, your business will
die. Therefore, advertising is a must for the success of your
business. Sure, word of mouth can take you places, but it can
only take you so far. Advertising is designed to pick up where
word of mouth leaves off.

ATTRITION IS A DEFINITE FACTOR TO CONSIDER

Attrition is a factor in all businesses. A business is able to
pick up so many customers and dollars on every advertising or
promotion venture. Yet, a certain portion of your old and new
customers and dollars will drop off over time.

You simply cannot rest on your laurels. You must continue to
generate new business and new dollars or your business will die.

EZINE PUBLISHING DELIVERS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF COMMERCIAL ATTRITION

If you have ever published an online ezine, then you will have
seen attrition first hand.

You can spend all week advertising your ezine and note that your
efforts have generated for example 500 new subscribers. Yet, by
the end of the week, your subscriber base has only climbed by
250 subscribers. What went wrong?

Well, this is how it works. Keep in mind this is only an example
to make my point, but if you have ever published an ezine, then
you will know I am right on the money with this observation.

In one week:

· 500 people sign up for the first time.
· 40 of those people unsubscribe after the very first
issue because they do not like the content.
· 30 people quit after the first issue because their
only purpose in subscribing in the first place was to get the
freebie you had offered to new subscribers.
· 30 of those people unsubscribe because they do not
remember subscribing to the ezine in the first place.
· 80 email addresses bounce due to ISP email filters.
· 20 people bounce because they did not pay their
Internet bill.
· 35 people have simply changed their email addresses
without submitting a change of address to you.
· 15 people have quit the Internet altogether.

In the final analysis, 100 of your new subscribers, or 20% of
your newcomers are gone after one week. Another 150 subscribers
were long-time subscribers who are gone for other reasons.

If you make the mistake of stopping your advertising, your ezine
list will eventually wind down to one subscriber --- you. In our
example, 150 long-time subscribers disappear every week, and
there is nothing you can do to stop it. You must absolutely keep
a fresh flow of new subscribers coming into the ezine in order
to stay ahead of the attrition curve.

STAYING AHEAD OF THE ATTRITION CURVE

An ezine or a business, what is the difference? Not much. Your
business will suffer the same fate as the ezine if you do not
advertise. I don’t know how to make it any more clear than this.

Yes, you must be careful not to throw your money away on
advertising that does not generate results. But you cannot
afford to throw the baby out with the bath water.

Carefully, pick your advertising, study your results, and put
your money back into what is working for you.

In conclusion, you must decide. Do you want to advertise your
business, or do you want to watch your business die? The
decision is yours and yours alone. Well, what are you going to
do?

Understanding the Different Methods of Offline Promotion

No business can survive the long run without some form of
consistent advertising. As a result, most business owners will
eventually consider using advertising to promote their business.

The toughest part of the advertising equation is in determining
where and how to spend your advertising dollars. If you do it
wrong, you could plunk down your entire advertising budget and
receive absolutely no return on your investment. But, if you do
it right, your advertising could continue to bring a nice return
for years to come.

HOW DO I MAKE THE RIGHT ADVERTISING DECISIONS

In order to make good decisions concerning how to spend your
advertising budget, you must first have a good understanding of
the different types of advertising and promotion available and
what can be expected to be achieved by each.

· You must understand which markets the different media's can
reach.
· You must understand the demographics of the media's
consumers.
· You must understand the buying habits of the consumers
reached through the media.

WHAT OFFLINE ADVERTISING & PROMOTION MEDIA'S SHOULD BE CONSIDERED

The media's that people think of most often are television,
radio, newspaper and magazine advertising. Of course, these are
the big boys that big businesses use regularly.

Other methods of promotion include trade shows, press releases,
direct sales, telemarketing, word of mouth, branding and
billboard advertising.

CONSIDERING THE BIG MEDIA OUTLETS

The big boys of advertising media's generally cost big bucks.
Given certain circumstances, the big media's can be bought for
very little money.

Take for example, television, radio and newspapers cost big
bucks during their prime times, but can be bought for pennies on
the dollar during non-primetime hours.

Television primetime is between 7pm and 10pm. Radio primetime is
between 7am and 6pm. With newspapers, the primetime is
Wednesdays and Sundays.

If you intend to hit a media during prime time, get ready to
drop some bucks. Primetime means that you will be able to hit
more consumers during these times. So, in most cases, a
primetime buy will enable you to reach more people with your
advertising.

Non-primetime hours can still deliver a lot of eyes and ears to
your message, and sometimes, these off-hours can be bought for a
bargain basement price.

GETTING MILEAGE FROM EVENTS

Trade shows and press releases are more event-driven. The trade
show is the event, while the press release generally exploits an
event.

Trade shows are an exceptional tool when you deal directly with
potential sellers of your products or services. Other shows are
directed at the consumer, and those can be very valuable avenues
for sales as well.

The press release is aimed towards gaining attention for a
business by distributing newsworthy information about the
business.

Sometimes the appearance of a business at a trade show or other
show can provide the necessary angle for a press release. But
most often, a successful press release will actually require
more noteworthy information than the appearance of a business at
a show.

Yet, even the most mundane of information could be spiced up to
give the real air of importance necessary to get your press
release read and printed.

The great thing about a press release is that might permit you
to get relatively inexpensive promotion on television, radio,
newspapers and magazines; for far less than what it would cost
you to buy advertising in those same outlets.

UTILIZING A SALES TEAM

Depending on what type of business you run and the consumers you
are trying to reach, you might find direct sales and
telemarketing to be very lucrative ways to drive sales to your
business.

Both are very similar in nature. Direct sales can be very
expensive, as it requires a great investment of time to
accomodate. Telemarketing seeks to minimize the time
expenditure, but it often leads to a smaller degree of respect
and attention.

Depending on your product or service --- and always depending
upon the people you employ to the task --- each method will be
more suited to each business on an individual basis.

BRANDING YOUR BUSINESS

I grouped branding and billboard advertising together in my
original list for a reason. I did this because billboard
advertising serves most businesses best by helping to support
the process of branding.

Branding is the process of establishing your business as the
supplier of a certain product or service, or in emphasizing a
certain USP (Unique Selling Proposition) as it pertains to your
business.

If branding and USP seems to be a confusing concept, think about
Wal-Mart and their tag line: "Always Low Prices, Always."

Think about Ford Motors, "Quality is Job One."

Think about the Visa Card, "It's Everywhere You Want To Be."

You see, these top corporations have managed to make their USP
part of their branding.

Even if you are only competing in a local marketplace, your USP
can and should fit snugly into your branding strategy.

NO MATTER THE MEDIA OR METHOD

Whichever method or media you should choose to employ in your
advertising and promotion, you should become knowledgable about
your market, and the consumers reached by each media. It is
important to understand which consumers can be reached by a
certain media, and in what quantities.

However you choose to spend your advertising dollars, you should
always track the results of your promotional efforts. Failing to
track successes and failures will ultimately lead to the failure
of a business.

When you know whom you are trying to reach and how you think you
might be able to reach them, you will begin to learn how to use
advertising and promotion to make your business successful. That
is a good thing --- after all, that is why you got into the
business in the first place, isn't it?

Understanding the Different Methods of Online Promotion

Did you realize there are only three types of online
promotion?... This statement may seem odd and even untrue in
your mind, but I am speaking in more general terms than you
might be thinking.

Let me explain.

The three types of promotion are Junk, Active and Passive
promotions.

JUNK PROMOTIONS ARE MONEY PITS

Junk promotions are those that seem to produce results, but by
their very nature are really only illusionary promotions.

For example, let me begin with FFA (Free For All) pages. You
might find yourself subscribing to a submission program that
tricks you into believing you are submitting your links to tens
of thousands search engines.

According to the Open Directory website, they have only approved
1705 search engines and directories for inclusion in their
database (http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Searching/).

I like using the DMOZ directory as an example because submitted
links are tested by human beings with integrity, for the honesty
used in site description. Search Engine Watch and other search
watchers tend to show fewer than these 1705 engines, primarily
because a lot of the engines provide very little value.

Yes, you can submit your URL to a FFA page, but FFA’s usually
only permit 100 or 1000 links on their page at any one time. So,
if ten thousand people are submitting a link to an FFA page on a
daily basis, then the average life of your link is between seven
minutes and 144 minutes. I suspect the actual number of
submitters is much higher and the results are much worse. Given
that few people surf FFA pages, the chances of your submission
being of any real value is practically nill!

Most of the people telling you that you can submit your site to
tens of thousands of search engines are truly only submitting
your site to FFA pages! Beware of the false promises.

Another junk promotion method is Safe Lists. A safe list is a
mailing group that is signed up to be received by people who
want to submit their own ads. Now, most safe lists have
thousands of subscribers who are able to submit their ads daily
or weekly. The person signed up to receive the list will receive
anywhere from twenty to 140+ messages a day from the list. These
messages will be received by people only interested in promoting
their own thing who do not have the right motivation to open,
let alone read Your Advertising. As a result, thousands of
messages go out daily or weekly that will never be seen by
anyone but the sender of the ad. Where is the value in that?
There is none.

ACTIVE PROMOTIONS

Active promotions are the type that require you to go out on a
daily basis or a weekly basis and put out your advertisements.
With active promotions, you will either place your advertising
or you will not sell your products or services. Your choice is
simple --- work or starve.

Examples of active promotions include Pay Per Click Search
Engines (PPCSE’s), Direct Email, Ezine Advertising, Solo Ezine
Ads, Newsletter Publishing, Ezine Ad Swaps, Classified Ads,
Auctions, Site Sponsorship and Banner Ads.

Some people are able to utilize these methods very productively,
while others are destined to drop their money into the
bottomless pit of failed Internet promotions.

PASSIVE PROMOTIONS

Passive promotions are those promotions that can continue to
provide results for you long after you have invested the work to
make them available to the Internet community.

Examples of passive promotions include: Link Exchanges,
Articles, Ebooks, Content Exchanges and Writing Testimonials for
others.

Let’s look at articles as a solid example of my point.

You are reading an article that I have written to promote my own
business. This article is timeless and therefore could have been
written five years ago and still have been as valuable as it is
today.

Due to the fact that the article is timeless, it can and will be
placed in newsletters/ezines and their accompanying online
archives, on websites and in ebooks for many more years to come.

As a result, this article will continue to serve me well beyond
the time in which I wrote it and submitted it to publishers and
webmasters for public consumption and publication.

This is the best example I can give you of an excellent passive
promotional method.

AVOID THE MONEY PITS

Many try and even fewer succeed to conquer the Internet and to
produce their dreams of online wealth.

My hope is that you will be one of the people who conquer the
challenges before you and to make a nice living while working
online. It will take drive, determination, study plus trial and
error, but you can make it work for you.

Please continue to educate yourself so that you can avoid the
money pits - instead, strive to find the money barrels. It can
be done. I am living proof.

How to Stay Focused on Your Home Business Goals

When you are the owner of a home business, you will find
hundreds of distractions that vie for your time, energy and
focus.

Common distractions include: children, family, friends,
neighbors, pets, phone calls, mail, household chores, video
games, television, neighborhood children, visitors, and so many
more.

As an owner of a home based business, you must always remember
your purpose in bringing your profession home. What was your
reason for wanting to own a home business? Was your goal to work
from home so that you can share in the lives of your children?
Was your goal to be out from under the rule of a tyrannical
boss? Was your goal to have the freedom to work when it is
convenient for you? Was your goal to make tons of money working
for yourself?

Here's a few good tips that will help you stay focused on your
home business:

TIP #1:
Whatever your reason for going out on your own, you must keep
your reason in the forefront of your mind. If you forget your
reason for starting your own home business, you will not be
working for yourself for long. It is far too easy to let
circumstance drive your activities --- and when circumstance is
in the driver's seat, you are more likely to crash and burn.

TIP #2:
Remember --- your own business is a lot like a real job. Some
people go to work to play, some go to socialize, and others ---
most often those who are paid in a commission or tip environment
--- go to work to work and to make money. When you work for
yourself, your salary is directly proportional to your
productivity. Therefore, wouldn't it make sense to stay focused
on getting as much done in as short of a period as possible?

Go to work to work and to make money. Leave playtime and
recreation for when your workday has ended.

TIP #3:
When you are dealing with family in the course of your workday,
it is important to schedule your activities as much as possible.
With small children, you must take time when you must, but you
should also work hard to make sure you dedicate a specific
number of hours to your workday.

With older children, it is much easier to tell them that you
will be working between the hours of x and y. Your children and
your friends must understand that certain hours of your day are
devoted to the activities of your business.

TIP #4:
Don't permit your friends and extended family to run over you.
Many people get the blind idea that if one works from home then
they are not actually working.

Well-meaning people may try to fill your doorway to bring advice
about getting a real job. Others may simply believe that if you
are at home, then you are fair game for chitchat and
socialization.

You must stand firm. You must make certain your friends and
family understands that when you are working, then you ARE
working! If they wish to socialize with you, then they need to
do it during the hours that are not dedicated to your home
business.

You are the only one who can stand up for you. Your friends and
family will seldom be able to appreciate your dedication to your
home business, unless you make the effort to make sure that they
have the same respect for your business that you do.

TIP #5:
You should allot a certain portion of your day to email and to
regular mail. For example, allot one hour in the morning and one
hour in the afternoon to handling your written communications.

Unless you dedicate certain times to the handling of these
communications, you will soon find yourself on the downward
slope of decreased productivity.

TIP #6:
When you find yourself spending too much time doing
non-productive activities, then you should seriously consider
finding a third-party service provider who will assist you in
those non-profitable business activities.

As an example, you might be in the mail-order business. You
might believe that your time is best spent writing ad copy and
setting up your advertising, but you find yourself spending far
too much time taking care of your books to take care of your
advertising in the manner that you should. In this event, it
might make more sense to hire a bookkeeper to handle your
financial records for you.

CONCLUSION:
In the end, the success of your home business is entirely and
completely reliant upon you and the decisions that you make.

You had your reasons for deciding to start your own home based
business. You must always keep your reasons in the forefront of
your mind. You must always be able to rely upon your own self
and your dedication to the success of your business.

Your friends and family might be annoyed that they cannot come
visit upon their own whim, but when success comes to you and
your business, they will better appreciate you for putting your
foot down when necessary.

Success is within your reach, if only you can stay focused on
your goals. You must decide to reach for your goals, and then,
you must have the discipline necessary to reach them.

Advertising Your Home Business on a Budget

When you are starting out in a new home business and no one
knows who you are, one of the greatest challenges you will face
is how to drum up new business.

If there were not people in your community or marketplace that
you knew who needed your products or services, you probably
would not have started your business to begin with. But, once
you have talked to those who you personally knew who needed your
what you offer, then your next task is to find others who will
help keep your doors open.

Many people know that they must turn to advertising at some
point in the future, but they hope that day will be long down
the road. For some, this utopian concept will come to fruition.
But for the rest of us in the real world, we must come up with
creative solutions for meeting our home business advertising
needs while working within our budget.

Most people have a misconception about having to spend lots of
money in order to advertise their home business. When you start
out, you honestly will not have much money available for
advertising, and if you do, you should still spend it wisely.

Before you jump headfirst into the world of advertising, let me
share some of the lessons I have learned concerning this most
important topic.

LESSON #1

It does not have to cost an arm and a leg to advertise your home
business, unless you fail to plan and fail to test.

As much as is possible, you should always test your advertising.
If you jump in and start dumping tons of money in to advertising
without first testing your advertising, you might find yourself
broke and without sales at the end of the road. Most people who
commit this error write off their failure on the home business
they chose or the economy or any of a hundred other excuses.
But, if they are unwilling to take responsibility for their
mistake, they will never learn from their mistake. Don't let
this be you.

LESSON #2

All testing should be done in blocks. If you begin to advertise
simultaneously in newspapers, radio and television, how will you
know which advertising is bringing people to your cash register?
You won't. All you will know that something might be working,
but you will not know what is actually doing the trick.

Even if you tell people in your advertising to tell you how they
found you, my experience shows that fewer than 10% of the people
ever will tell you anything --- and those people who do may not
even get the facts straight! You cannot rely on your customers
to tell you what advertising is working for your home business.
You must put in the extra effort to know for yourself.

LESSON #3

Only when you have a proven and solid advertising portfolio
should you venture to drop big bucks in an advertising campaign.
Even then, you should be careful to keep further measurements to
determine how much the maximum advantage of an ad would be.
Sometimes you might be able to reach ten times as many people,
but depending on the kind of media and other factors, the
additional exposure will only generate twice as many sales. Keep
your eye attuned to situations like this to get the most from
your advertising dollars.

LESSON #4

As Lesson #3 illustrates, sometimes your best advertising
investment may actually cost you less money. When you are first
starting out, whether you are running a home business or a
business outside of your home, you need to be able to get people
talking and thinking about your business.

If you are busy testing ads in media's such as the newspaper,
magazines, radio, and television, you need to learn ways of
promoting your business that do not require large cash
expenditures. A few examples are:

· Word of Mouth
· Business Cards
· Press Releases

Here is more information about each type of low-cost advertising:

WORD OF MOUTH

This of course is the cheapest kind of advertising on the planet
--- it does not cost you anything. Ask your customers if they
know anyone who could also use your products or services. When
they are happy with your offerings and service, they will be
willing to tell you whom you can contact, and they will pass the
word for you.

BUSINESS CARDS

You can usually pick up 500 business cards for about $20. When
you do, hand them out. Do not give more than a couple of cards
to each person. If they need more cards from you, they will ask.

Some people are known to network with others on a regular basis.
Some of these people are also known to be always looking for an
extra few bucks. With these people, you can suggest to them that
if they write their name on the back of one of your business
cards and the card is presented to you, then you will pay a
referral fee to them. You do not have to offer much ---
sometimes one dollar is enough. Look at your home business and
your offerings and decide how much would be a good referral fee.

PRESS RELEASES

Press Releases are a good source for generating news about your
home business. The business editor at your local newspaper is
always on the lookout for a good business story to fill the
business news section of the newspaper.

Of course, the business editor understands the economics of
running a paper and is more inclined to run your story if you
buy advertising in his/her publication, but will still print
stories for special events and openings.

The important thing to remember about Press Releases is that it
must be constructed in the form of a news story. Even if you are
a sole proprietorship, quotes from you should be written in a
third person format: John Doe said, "Your quote here."

A Press Release should pack the most important information at
the beginning of the copy, and leave extra details towards the
end.

You should always provide the reporter who gets the task a
simple and easy way for him/her to contact you directly. Often
the reporter will want to contact you to get details that will
enhance their take on your story.

NON-PRIMETIME ADS ON RADIO AND TELEVISION

Believe it or not, some of the best rates for radio and
television are on the overnight and non-primetime venues. These
target times are not a total waste as they can easily keep the
infomercial people in business.

These off-hours are just less populated than the primetime hours.

Don't be afraid to check your local radio and television rates
for non-primetime hours to see what bargains may exist. With
television, primetime is 7pm to 10pm. With radio, primetime is
8am to 5pm. This sure leaves a whole lot of hours available to
advertise your home business at discount rates!

IN CONCLUSION

When it comes down to it, there is a lot to understand about
advertising, but when you have the basic knowledge down pat,
everything will fall into place and bring more dollars to your
bank account.

Google Page Creator Tutorial

Overview

Google's page creator is targeted at people who want to build a website, but have no clue where to start. It includes everything you need to have a fully functional website up and running in minutes. You don't need to worry about domain names, hosting or learning how to code HTML, Google has done all the hard work so you don't have to.

The service comes with 100mb of webspace, which is enough to store maybe 1000 web-sized photos. Once you have signed in to the page creator you are taken straight to the page editor.

The top menu lets you change the look and layout, or preview and publish the site. The upper left-hand menu gives you some familiar text editor functions such as bold, italic, bullet list, font, text-size and text alignment. You can also insert images and links from here. The lower left hand menu lets you change between headings, and normal text. The main window is where you do all the typing, and where you can arrange your images and text.

There is also an extremely useful auto-save feature that will save your work every few minutes in case your browser closes.

Getting Started

Click in to the title section (outlined in red dashes) and give your home page a title. Use backspace to delete what is there already and then just type the title you want with your keyboard.

Edit your page's header and footer using the same method as above.

Click in to the main body area of the page and begin typing. You can add images, links and text in a variety of formats.

Uploading Pictures

This is quite straight forward.

Make sure your cursor is somewhere in the main window (preferrably where you want the image to be).

Then, simply hit the image icon then select an image by either browsing on your local computer or entering a URL location.

You then have 4 options, to display the image as small, medium, large or orginial size.

The image is inserted into the WYSIWYG editor and then you can drag it around to whereever you want. It looks like you can only align the image left, center or right at the moment. You can also place an image in the middle of some text and the text will attempt to wrap around it.

Formatting Text

Headings

When entering text, you have 4 options for whether the text is a heading or just normal text. To switch between them you simply click the required heading type from the lower left hand menu.

Generally you will want to be in normal text mode.

Heading Types

Heading - this is the largest heading. On this page "Getting Started" is a main heading.
Subheading - this is the next heading type, as demonstrated by "Headings" on this page.
Minor Heading - this is the smallest heading type. "Heading Types" on this page is a minor heading.
Normal - this is the default text type.

Tip - once you have added a heading, press enter to go to a new line, and then switch the heading type back to normal text to continue writing.

Text Alignment

You have 3 options for text alignment; left, center and right aligned. This is pretty self-explanatory, but for those of you who have never used a word processor before:

This text is left aligned

This text is center aligned

This text is right aligned
Font Families

At the time of writing there were 7 font types to choose from. This is the default normal font.

Times New Roman
Arial
Courier New
Georgia
Trebuchet
And last but not least, Verdana

Font Sizes

Small
Normal
Large
Huge!

Other Text Options
There are also options for bold and italics as well as a colour pallete with 70 different colours to choose from.

Creating Links

Adding links in Google's page creator is easy. There are 4 types of links you can add to your web pages:
You can link to other pages on your Google website, files or images that you have uploaded, other external web pages and e-mail addresses. If you want to link to a file, then this window will also give you an option to upload it.

Advanced Options

For those of you who know some HTML then there is a mode to edit the raw HTML.

You can switch the layout of the site to one, two, or three columns.

You can change the look of the site by selecting a different template. This page is currently using the default template, but at the time of writing there were 41 templates to choose from.

Conclusion
This is another great tool by Google, and despite its BETA tag I couldn't find any major bugs with it. The only one problem I found was with the size of heading text changing toward the end of this page, which meant I manually had to make it "large".

Uploading images and files was easy, as was using the text formatting tools. All in all, it took me a little over an hour to create this page including taking and uploading all the screenshots.

Anyone who can use a word processor confidently should find building pages with Google Page Creator easy, so the test for me now is to see if I can get my internet newbies to use it and start creating pages of their own.

Up until now blogging was the easiest way of getting your words and pictures on the web without any prior HTML knowledge, but this tool gives us another option.

DirectMatches - Terrific Resource To Get Members

I'm sure most of you have heard of MySpace, the social network phenomena that has 40+ million members. DirectMatches builds on that idea but gears it for the professional and network marketing audience.

DirectMatches is a free to join network where you can create a profile, network with your primary prospect group and advertise your Plug in Profit business.

DirectMatches is the first in the online business and social networking industry to deploy a multi-matchmaking system that helps people locate everything from business contacts to network marketing professionals. It is the first business and social networking service with a contact management system that operates on a "dynamic basis", where members are able to select from dedicated networking communities.

Here's how you can get the most out of your DirectMatches membership.

You will want to get at least a "Managing IR" membership ($19.95) to be able to get the most out of this tool.

Once you've signed up you will want to set up your user profile. There are 3 areas that you will be placing your profile information. Keep in mind that this information is used to match you against other members profiles in the system. Here is what I put in my profile to match the people I'm most looking for in the system:

Under "Occupation" I checked "MLM". You may want to check "Retired" and "Self-Employed" as well.

Under "Business Topics" I checked "Ad Strategies", "Internet Marketing" and "Home Based Business".

Under "Business Interests" I checked "Marketing, Advertising" and "Networking".

Once you've done that put your other information in and click on "submit".

You will then be taken to your profile page where you will want to click on "My Business Matches". You will find that you should have matched hundreds if not thousands of other members. This is where you will get started in building your DirectMatches contact base.

Once you are on the "My Business Matches" page you will want to start adding contacts. Assuming all of these folks match what you are looking for, go ahead and start clicking on the "add me to contacts" button for each one. You want to go through at least the first 10 pages, which will be 100 contacts. Once you've done that you can go back to those contact profiles and send them an email introducing yourself. Keep it informal and short. Make sure you have your sig file on the bottom of your email (you can set it up in your email options).

You will now have 100 contacts that you will have made initial contact with. Hopefully, they should all add you as a contact on their page. They will automatically show up in your contact section on your page giving you the opportunity to have regular communications with them. You will want to continue this process (adding business matches) on a daily basis. By the end of the week you should have 700 new contacts to network with and more than likely a few sign ups into Plug in Profit.

The next thing you can do as part of your DM strategy is to send daily group emails out to your contact list. You are limited to sending it to 60 people a day so plan accordingly. That doesn't mean you can't send more than that, just that you can only send 60 group messages at a time. I would send a daily tip out, something that will help them in building their MLM business. You can tie it to the Success Guide or just something that you are doing to drive traffic. People will soon start to expect this from you and you will become an information resource for them. Send a link to your blog as well as a helpful resource.


Another powerful feature you have within DM is the network search feature that you will find in your mail page. You will use it to locate members that are in particular network marketing companies, like Shaklee or Xango. You will get back pages of contacts that belong to that MLM group. Once you've done that you click on "add me to contacts", then I come back to their profile and click on the email link. Here is what I email them:

I'm going to be direct and to the point..

Try and send out at least 15-20 of these everyday. It is a more aggressive approach but it works really well.

The other activity you can do is to post comments on your contacts page. Simply go to their page and click on add a comment. You can write a quick note and add the Plug in Profit banner in that comment field as well.

By working your DM resource on a daily basis you will bring a good deal of qualified traffic to your Plug in Profit website and start getting signups from that traffic.
